The First Time It Happens

I remember the first time my son hit me out of frustration. We were in the kitchen. He wanted the snack now, I asked him to wait—and whack. Tiny hand. Full swing. Straight to my leg. I froze. Not because it hurt (though…ouch), but because I didn’t know what to do. My instinct wanted to scold him, to raise my voice. But deep down, I knew I needed to pause and handle it differently.

If you’ve found yourself in the same boat—surprised, hurt, maybe even embarrassed by your toddler’s behavior—you’re not alone. And you’re definitely not a bad parent.

Here’s what helped us navigate those tough moments and gently guide our son toward safer ways of expressing himself.

Understanding Why Toddlers Hit

Toddlers are not trying to be aggressive in the way adults might think of it. Their emotions are bigger than their skills. When they don’t have the words—or the tools—to say, “I’m angry,” or “I’m overwhelmed,” their body does the talking.

  • They hit when they’re overstimulated.
  • They hit when they’re tired or hungry.
  • They hit when they don’t feel heard.

And yes, it’s completely normal (even if it’s not okay). What matters most is how we respond. We’re just parents learning alongside our kids. Not experts. This is what worked for us—but every child is different. Always check in with your pediatrician if you’re unsure.

What Not to Do First

If you’re like me, your gut reaction might be to raise your voice or punish them quickly. Totally understandable—but that rarely helps. I learned the hard way that reacting with a big emotion of my own only added fuel to the fire.

What didn’t work:

  • Yelling “Stop it right now!”
  • Shaming: “What is wrong with you?”
  • Ignoring it and hoping it stops

Toddlers crave connection. Even negative attention counts as attention. So if we meet their hitting with high drama, we’re accidentally reinforcing it.

What Helped Us: Calm Before Correction

What turned things around in our home was simple in theory, but hard in practice: staying calm. Like, really calm. Even when I was steaming inside.

Here’s how I grounded myself:

  • Deep breath before speaking
  • Quick body check: unclench jaw, soften shoulders
  • Quiet voice (even a whisper helped shift the energy)

I reminded myself that I was the grown-up, and my calm could help co-regulate his chaos.

A Simple 3-Step Response That Worked

Once I could meet the moment with calm, I used this approach every time hitting happened. It’s not a quick fix, but it worked—over time.

1. Name What You See
Instead of jumping straight to “No hitting,” I started with:
“You’re really upset because your toy got taken.”
This helped him feel seen, not scolded. It softened the moment and opened the door to connection.

2. Validate the Feeling (Not the Behavior)
The key was separating emotion from action. I said:
“It’s okay to feel mad. But it’s not okay to hit.”
It took practice. A lot of it. But it laid the foundation for emotional intelligence.

3. Set a Clear, Calm Limit
And then I followed through, every time, without yelling.
“I’m going to hold your hands now so everyone stays safe.”
“I won’t let you hit. I’m moving away to stay safe.”
Sometimes I’d repeat myself a dozen times. Sometimes he cried. But the limit was consistent. And that built trust.

Don’t Forget the Follow-Up

Once the moment passed, we always came back to it later—after a snack, a nap, or some playtime. Calm brains are learning brains.

We’d talk about:
“Earlier, you were so angry when your brother took your toy. Next time, what can we do instead of hitting?”
Sometimes he said “I don’t know,” and that was okay. We offered ideas:

  • “Say ‘I’m mad!’”
  • “Stomp your feet.”
  • “Come tell me.”

The goal wasn’t to erase the emotion, but to give him tools to ride it safely.

FAQs: When Your Toddler Hits

What if my toddler hits me on purpose?
It feels personal, but it’s not. Stay calm, move your body, and set the boundary. “I won’t let you hurt me. I’m moving over here.”

What if they laugh after hitting?
This is often a stress response. Stay steady and remind them gently: “Even if you’re laughing, I won’t let you hit.”

Should I punish them?
We found that consequences didn’t teach much at this age. What taught him most was connection, consistency, and modeling safe responses.

When should I worry about aggression?
If hitting becomes frequent, intense, or interferes with their daily life, trust your gut and check in with a pediatrician.

Reminder: Everything I’m sharing is from my own parenting experience. Please talk to your child’s doctor for personalized advice.

You’re Not Failing. You’re Growing.

Stopping your toddler from hitting isn’t about getting it perfect—it’s about being present. Some days, you’ll handle it with grace. Other days, you’ll yell and feel awful. That’s okay. Repair matters more than perfection.

What helped us most was learning to pause, connect, and respond with calm—even when we were exhausted. You can do this. And you’re not alone.
